How important are keywords to SEO?
In the early days of digital marketing, good SEO site optimization meant: keywords – and lots of them. In an attempt to rank on a search engine results page, SEO experts have written content with a pile of keywords, many times without any sense.
Times have changed. Google now penalizes sites for “keyword accumulation,” which Google describes as “accumulating site content with keywords or numbers in an attempt to manipulate a site’s ranking in Google search results.” Keyword accumulation, Google says, “results in a negative user experience and you can crash the position of your site. “
According to Google, keyword accumulation can take the following forms:
• Long keyword lists without any context or meaning
• Blocks of text that list the cities and countries for which the site is trying to rank

Keywords are less important to search than they used to be. A study on ranking factors by SEMRush found that keywords are less important than 11 other ranking factors, including site visits, time spent on it, site departure rate, content length.
According to the report, the use of keywords is one of the most popular SEO techniques, but “the presence of keywords in the title, meta description and body of the text proved to be significantly less influential than other factors.”

Keywords are still important, you just need to use them in the right way. According to Google, your goal should be “to focus on creating useful and rich information content that uses keywords appropriately and in context.”
Google is getting better at understanding user intent and measuring the relevance of content, which means it is able to see more of what a user is typing in the search box to understand what they are really looking for, and to display results that meet that need. Therefore, content should be written for the user, not for the keyword.
However, there is still a correlation between full keyword content and search engine rankings. According to a SEMRush report, “over 75% of the sites in the top 20 search results have keywords in their content and over 60% have them in their title.”
So keep those keywords in your content, but make sure they appear in a natural context and that your content provides real value to your site visitors. If you write valuable content that will be useful to readers who come to your site through keyword search, your keywords are likely to have context in your content, and Google will reward you with a higher search rank.
